Mission

The Center for Urban Ethnography's broad mission is to promote and support interdisciplinary research on urban issues using participant-observation and allied techniques. In this regard, the Center has two mandates: research and training. The primary objective in the area of research is to provide in-depth understanding of issues and problems facing urban environments throughout the world. In the area of training, the primary goal is to instruct undergraduate and graduate students in the principles and techniques of various schools of ethnography.

To this end, the Center for Urban Ethnography is international in its focus and will encourage, support and facilitate research on a wide variety of topics that include, but are not limited to, inequality, poverty, race and ethnic relations, crime and violence, economic development, and health in urban environments throughout the world. It will also facilitate intellectual exchange among students and faculty affiliated with similar research centers in other countries. Presently there are formal agreements with centers in Brazil, France, and Holland, but more are expected. There will be regular sessions (courses and seminars) that train undergraduate and graduate students in the method of participant-observation. Finally, the Center will support the disseminationof the most up-to-date information from its various research projects.
